Counseling & Psychological Services
Counseling and Psychological Services supports the psychological and emotional well-being of the campus community by providing counseling, consultations, and crisis interventions—all of which adhere to strict standards of confidentiality.
Mission
Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) offers psychological counseling, couples counseling for students and their partners, student life support groups, and medication consultations to all Columbia University undergraduate and graduate students on the Morningside Campus who have paid the health service fee. Emergency consultations and trainings are available to the entire university community. CPS adheres to strict standards of confidentiality.
Services
Short-term Individual and Couples Counseling
is available by appointment for students enrolled in the Health Service Program. Students requesting an appointment for individual counseling for the first time will have a phone appointment with a CPS clinician who will discuss the student’s needs and set up the initial visit. Students requestng an appointment for couples counseling will be given an intake appointment with one of our counselors who specializes in couples counseling. Students with acute psychiatric emergencies will be seen without an appointment wherever CPS is open. Students are encouraged to
select a clinician
, and may also request to transfer to a different clinician at any time. To meet the needs of the many students who utilize CPS each year, services are time-limited.
Residence Hall Offices
Undergraduate students can be seen on a walk-in basis in any of the four residence hall offices located in 100 Carman Hall, 210 East Campus, 112A Hartley Hall, and 600 W. 113th Street Room 2BB.
Referrals
Ongoing treatment referrals are available for psychotherapy through our wide network of providers. Students who have paid the Health Service Fee are automatically provided with insurance coverage that helps to defray the cost of off-campus treatments. Students must first obtain a referral through CPS to be eligible for this benefit.
Outreach and Consultations
Consultations are available for students, parents, faculty, and staff who would like advice on how to handle a difficult situation with a friend, student, or peer. CPS also provides workshops and training in the university community.
Medication and Psychopharmacology
Medication consultation and short-term treatment with medication is available and provided by staff psychiatrists.
Groups
Student life support groups and discussions led by CPS clinicians are available on a variety of topics such as eating disorders, bereavement, social shyness, and procrastination to students who have paid the Health Service Fee.
Emergencies
A
clinician-on-call
is available for urgent consultation after hours. Students may also contact the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center Psychiatric Emergency Room.
