Avy joined Health Services at Columbia in 2009 while concurrently pursuing his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Teachers College. Prior to embarking on his graduate education, Avy worked as a community educator and advocate with the Anti-Violence Project, an organization working to end hate violence, police brutality, partner abuse and sexual assault against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.

Avy's research interests include sexual and gender identity development and the effects of societal and interpersonal oppression on marginalized communities. Avy received his B.A. at Colorado College in Psychology with a minor in Women's Studies.
