Columbia University Health Services

For Students and Families with Columbia Medical Insurance

Both the Basic and Comprehensive Levels of the Columbia Student Medical Insurance Plan offer the following dental benefits:

Treatment of Specified Serious Dental Conditions

The Columbia Student Medical Insurance Plan provides insurance coverage for accidental dental injury and for the treatment of certain dental conditions:

  • Emergency treatment of accidental injuries to sound, natural teeth
  • Non-emergency treatment of accidental injury to sound, natural teeth
  • Extraction of impacted wisdom teeth
  • Treatment of dental abscesses

These benefits are underwritten by Aetna and administered by The Chickering Group. Costs to the patient are lowest when services are rendered by a dentist who is a member of the Aetna network—a Preferred Provider—except for true emergency treatment of an accidental dental injury, which is covered at the same rate when provided by either a Preferred or Non–Preferred Provider. Visit the Health Services website for a full description of rates.

Students and families may obtain these covered services at Morningside Dental Associates (MDA), a program of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, but will need to pay the applicable fees at the time of service and then submit the invoices to Chickering for reimbursement. Services provided by MDA are covered at the Preferred Provider rates.

See the Health Services website for a full description of rates. To locate an Aetna Preferred Provider go to www.aetna.com/docfind.

Specified Preventive Services and Emergency Evaluation

A specified set of routine preventive services as well as emergency evaluations are offered through MDA. These services are not underwritten by Aetna, nor administered by Chickering. The following services are available with only a copay*, which is required for each visit:

  • One routine examination per year
  • X-rays as needed, and with routine exam
  • One dental cleaning (prophylaxis) per year
  • Evaluation of emergency dental conditions, including relief of pain

*Students enrolled in the Basic Level of the Plan pay a $20 copay. Students in the Comprehensive Level of the Plan pay a $10 copay. For family members enrolled in the Columbia Student Medical Insurance Plan, a $20 copay will apply to one routine visit per year (including a cleaning, exam and x-rays). For other treatments, see below.

Dental Services Provided at Specially Discounted Rates

Those enrolled in the Columbia Student Medical Insurance Plan may also obtain the following dental services from MDA at specially discounted rates:

  • Restoration (fillings, composites, crowns)
  • Endodontics
  • Periodontics
  • Oral surgery
  • Orthodontics

For these services, students enrolled in the Basic Level of the Plan are charged 90% of normal MDA student fees. Students enrolled in the Comprehensive Level of the Plan are charged 75% of normal MDA student fees. For these services, family members pay normal MDA student fees, but are not eligible for the additional discounts described for covered students.

Full payment is required for these services at the time they are rendered.
