Cochlear Implants

General Information

Cochlear Implants

A cochlear implant is an electronic device which can allow deaf and hard of hearing individuals to perceive sound. One part of the device is surgically implanted in the inner ear, while the other is worn on the outside of the ear and is attached to the internal piece via magnets. Unlike hearing aids, cochlear implants do not amplify or clarify sound, but rather convert sounds into electrical signals and transmit them directly to the auditory nerve, thereby bypassing the damaged portions of the ear.
