Deaf Culture

General Information

Deaf Culture

Being Deaf consists of a great deal more than an inability to hear. Deaf people have not only a common language in American Sign Language, but shared values, behaviors, and art that encompass a unique Deaf community and culture. The close-knit Deaf community has become more visible in recent years, most notably during a 1988 student protests at Galludet University, a school with a mostly deaf and Hard-of-Hearing student population. Student activists from the group Deaf President Now successfully lobbied the University to select its first Deaf president.
