Multiple Sclerosis

General Information

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the fatty tissue called myelin that protects the nerve fibers of the Central Nervous System. Areas of the CNS that are stripped of myelin can be left with scars, or lesions, called sclerosis. When scarring occurs, the central nervous system, which acts as a control center for the body, is unable to relay messages throughout the nervous system.

Students with Multiple Sclerosis may have difficulty commuting to and from class, taking class notes, and finishing exams in the allotted amount of time. They may also have difficulty carrying books and need library assistance when utilizing the library facilities.
