When we encounter experiences that overwhelm our capacity to cope, the body and mind respond in protective ways. Over time, these responses can form a kind of suit of armor—meant to keep us safe, but often feeling too heavy to carry and too risky to take off.
In this workshop, participants will explore how the autonomic nervous system reacts to stressors and trauma, and how these responses affect both the body and mind. Participants will also learn how the nervous system shapes our sense of safety and connection with others, and how to apply appropriate coping strategies based on their current nervous system state.
Objectives:
- Understand typical responses to traumatic stress
- Understand how the autonomic nervous system is implicated in trauma
- Identify ways to cope based on nervous system state
Students attending this workshop will receive credit for the Community Citizenship Initiative and will have their requirement considered complete.
